Jerry Garcia “Alligator” Tribute strat
Hey Now! This is a tribute to Jerry Garcia’s iconic “Alligator” stratocaster. This is NOT a Fender product, but is an “Alligator” tribute guitar that will definitely get you the EU’72 vibe. Plays great, sounds right & has plenty of years under the belt already. The body & neck are original to each other - they seem to be a ‘70s lawsuit era MIJ product, based on the headstock. Both are rock solid, with plugged & redrilled neck screws for stability with a non-original neckplate. The original plate was smaller - this Squier plate fits nicely & does the job well. This is not a Fender, not a Squier and not a FMIC product in any way. No cracks, no separations, no structural issues. No idea what kind of wood this is, either - but it looks great. Lots of dings, dents, scratches & abandoned mounting screw holes, but they all add to the vibe. Tuners may be original, I’m not sure - but they work great, and look good too. String retainer is original, and of a “Teisco” style but does the job, and is a nice spin on the Alligator Footman’s Loop vibe. Neck is 1.680” wide at the nut .929” at the first fret, 1.019” at the twelfth fret. Beefy! But also comfortable, with naturally rolled fingerboard edges from decades of play. Weighs approximately 8.6lbs, body is about 1 2/3” thick 25.5” scale length Pickups are Bootstrap ‘54 Sparkle -vulcanized fiber bobbins -42 AWG enameled copper wire -ALNICO 3 magnets -RW/RP middle pickup -lightly potted in a mix of beeswax & paraffin -5.6k output Electronics are Waldotronics spec for Alligator during EU’72 - 1M Rev Log volume pot, 250k Linear neck & middle tone, 1M Linear bridge tone. Tone capacitor is NOS Cornell Dubilier .1uf 100V - just like the original Alligator. The switch is a 5 position switch, which is NOT like the original, but a heck of a lot more convenient. There is NO BOOST CIRCUIT in this guitar. This is a fully passive instrument. Solid brass hardware throughout. This body was originally a hardtail, and the bridge is mounted on posts & thumbwheels. SADDLES HAVE NOT BEEN SLOTTED and are left mostly untouched to be set up to your personal preference. Knobs are NOS Raytheon, just like the original. Stickers are new. Guitar plays great. Neck is very playable for its size, with comfortable fingerboard edges. I think these are the original frets, and while they’re pretty low, they’re very playable. Guitar plays clean up & down the neck. Truss rod is fully functional and very responsive. Neck has been shimmed to accommodate the new brass bridge, and plays great in the upper register. Exposed string ground at tailpiece is fully functional. I’m genuinely floored by how much fun this guitar is to play, and how great it sounds. These ‘70s MIJ strats can be hit-or-miss, and this one HITS for sure! ALL QUESTIONS ANSWERED - more pictures and info available.
