The material starts as a powder, and lasers are used to melt the powder into a solid. The result is a strong part without the filaments you see in more common FDM printers. I’ve used this technology to print pickup rings and wrist pads for Remora. For this build I wanted to experiment with having the entire pickguard printed. Stylistically this is a throwback to molded pickguards on budget guitars from the 1960’s. 3d printing allows for the raised pickup rings to be incorporated into the guard. I was also able to add an extrusion around the slide switch that prevents the user from accidentally switching positions. Like many of the budget guitars that inspired the build, I’ve raised the neck and bridge up to account for the extra height of the guard and rings. I’ve been using a dual triangular guard layout on SM65 basses for a while, and I decided it would be a good shape for the printed guards. I also thought it would be cool to use strong contrasting colors, with a black and white over the red. It feels like a lost relic of the 1960’s guitar boom. Rob Banta at Gemini Pickups would a killer custom pickup set for this guitar. The square bobbins harken back to Japanese builds from the 1960s. The word I would use to describe these pickups is articulate. They are bright and dynamic. I think these are a great set for Jazz, Blues, Country, and jangly Power Pop. I’ve used a 6 position Freeway switch to provide access to the middle pickup. You get each pickup individually, and all three combinations of two pickups. All the sounds are distinct and useable. The most unique feature of this build is my patent pending Remora Electro-Trem. applying pressure to the wrist pad behind the bridge will allow you to dynamically control volume or tone. If the slide switch is in the down position, you can use the pad to produce tremolo, swells, and clean up a dirty amp. In the up position pressing down rolls off treble. You can use this for filter effects, or to change tone for specific notes or passages. This is all achieved passively and there are no batteries to replace. If you like to be able to add a little movement, but don’t want to risk going out of tune, this is for you. The body is a thin piece of light weight pine, with a red dye under a satin finish. Its got a thick laminated Cherry neck, a beautiful Sheoak fingerboard, and sparkly opal dot inlays. Hipshot tuners and a Descendant BCB bridge from Swope Guitars complete the hardware line up.
